IS MASTERCLASS WORTHY?

The Electronic Dance Music Community stumbled upon the announcement of Deadmau5 and most recently Armin Van Buren joining Masterclass website with video tutorial about Making Electronic Dance Music, there are not more excuses at least that’s what everybody thought.

Masterclass.com is a web based platform that teaches people several topics, really famous instructors that have polished their craft for many years, now for a moderate amount of money they are sharing Video tutorials, so you just Watch, Listen and Learn.

Mr Joel Zimmerman a.k.a Deadmau5 was the first Electronic Music Producer to have his own Masterclass and Armin Van Buren also joined with his own class as well. Both sharing their approach to Electronic Music Production from their own studios.

The goal you its to teach you how they: Make, Mix, Master and Market their Songs; you will also get feedback from your class and tutor, and you can track your progress using a downloadable workbook with lesson recaps and supplemental materials.

On top of all that if you are good enough, your outcome might be reviewed by deadmau5 himself who will critique your work if you are worth of him having a listen on your stuff, all of this for a very reasonable fee.

Raveradar Team paid the fees and took the time to virtually attend this web seminars with the purpose of sharing with you our opinion about this new way of learning, which in fact sounds really interesting considering such instructors.

We decided to take first Deadmau5 Masterclass since is one of our favorite artists. The lessons are pretty instructive on his process to approach Music Production, He is a PC Guy so he assembled his own server loaded with bunch of plugins, using BITWIG as Digital Audio Workstation, He also explained what is include in his setup and also claimed that everybody can do amazing music from a bedroom without all the stuff he has, indeed he did it at some point of his career.

Down to nitty gritty, he open up a project and explained Drums, arrangement and some effects, he also described his arragement process which is impressive, even tought he does not play the MIDI Keyboard, in fact he does not even has one on his setup, he does everything manually, by manually we mean using Computer Keyboard, Mouse and Ears.

At this moment we were shocked, by the facts that Deadmau5 does not have a Midi Keyboard on his Setup and he does not even know how to play any instrument !!!, Lovely!!! That is definitely is an example to follow !!!

In terms of structure of his songs he did not explained too much, but it was obvious that he was more interested in showing that you do not need anything but a Laptop, software and practice, a lot of practice.

Once completed Deadmau5 Masterclass we were a little disappointed because our expectations were bigger than what we got, however we understood his message so we moved forward to Armin Van Buren Masterclass.

Armin van Buren was more descriptive in his approach to Music Production, his Masterclass was more intended to demonstrate how Beat Creation, Arrangement and Vocals get along on his production.

He does not always creates with the help of people but he prefers to have help of his close friends because makes brainstorming and composition more proactive and fun.

Armin also explained how important is the dynamics, silence and space in his music, he use these as instruments to create anticipation so the crowd understands when the drop or as he describes the Pay Off , is coming.

Both were really instructive, Deadmau5 went deep in setup, sound design, and Armin van Buren explained exactly what Deadmau5 did not, Armin was more interested in Song structuring, its parts and how those parts are intended to guide the crowd through the song and also to share a feeling.

Even though we love Deadmau5 and Armin van Buren, we do not consider the knowledge shared was worthy the money spent, it was something really fun to watch, also few facts and tips we found interesting but it does not make such an impact in your production skills, all this topics and more you can learn for free on YouTube Tutorials.

The value of this classes to help you in the creation of Music is not big for those that understands Music Production, In the other hand for those enthusiasts that wants to make better music it might be worthy taking both classes for tips and advise from such experienced Tutors.

This article only represents Raveradar.com opinion about the value of such Product or Service in the Music Production Learning Process. No other intention but figuring out if it would help to make the Music you want or Make better Music if you are already on the track.
